
Hernandez & Burkhardt Sustain Tough Loss at NCAAs

ATHENS, GA. - The 2012 University of North Carolina men's tennis season came to an end Thursday night as Tar Heel players lost tough matches in both singles and doubles at the Dan Magill Tennis Center at the University of Georgia.
In singles action in the morning, Jose Hernandez, a junior from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, fell to 14th-ranked Nik Scholtz of the University of Mississippi in NCAA Tournament second round action Hernandez won the first set 6-3 but Scholtz rallied to win the second set 7-6, overcoming a 1-4 deficit in the tiebreaker. Scholtz, who is a 9-16 seed in the tournament, went on to win the third set 6-2.
In doubles action, Hernandez and his doubles partner, senior Joey Burkhardt from St. Augustine, Fla., went shot for shot with the nation's #1-ranked doubles team, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rolad of Ohio State. Both sets went to tiebreakers with the Ohio State duo prevailing 7-6, 7-6. Buchanan and Rola won four straight points in the second set tiebreaker to triumph 7-4.
Buchanan and Rola improved to 32-3 on the season while Hernandez and Burkhardt, one of the hottest doubles teams in the nation over the past several weeks, ended their season at 13-4. The UNC team is ranked #20 in the national ITA rankings.
