CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two University of North Carolina golfers, Catherine O'Donnell and Casey Grice, are honorable mention Golfweek All-Americas as announced earlier this week. The All-America teams were determined by the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. O'Donnell and Grice were earlier selected to the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team.
O'Donnell, the 2012 NCAA West Regional champion and co-champion of the 2012 LSU Golf Classic, carded five top-25 finishes this spring after being hampered by a thumb injury in the fall and led the Tar Heels with a 73.73 scoring average. O'Donnell, a senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., posted one additional win during her four-year career as she was co-champion of the 2008 Tar Heel Invitational. She was the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year and a four-time selection to the All-ACC team, the first four-time honoree in Carolina history. O'Donnell was named to the 2012 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-West Region Team after being chosen to the 2011 NGCA All-East Region Team. She was a 2011 NGCA All-America Honorable Mention and selected to the 2011 Ping Golfweek All-America Third Team after being an honorable mention selection in 2009.
Grice, a rising junior from College Station, Texas, carded five top-10 and eight top-20 finishes this year. Her top performance came at the ACC Championships where she placed fifth and led the Tar Heels to a runner-up finish. Grice boasts a 73.88 scoring average for the year.
Another Tar Heel, Maia Schechter, recently won the Kickoff at Disney hosted by the Hurricane Collegiate Amateur Tour. Schechter, a rising sophomore from Takoma Park, Md., fired rounds of 67-73-78 for a 2-over-par 218 total on the par-72 layout at Osprey Ridge Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Her first-round score of 67 included six birdies and one eagle. Samantha Marks, who will be joining the Tar Heels this fall as a freshman, was the runner-up in the 54-hole event. Marks, from Maitland, Fla., fired a 4-over 220 total carding rounds of 73-76-71. Earlier this summer, she qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women's Open.
