Carolina Announces 2012 Men's Soccer Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's soccer head coach Carlos Somoano announced his squad's 2012 schedule Thursday. The Tar Heels will take on eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago after capturing the NCAA title in 2011.
Carolina will play a pair of exhibition matches before the regular season kicks off Aug. 31. The Tar Heels will hit the road to take on Winthrop in an exhibition match Wednesday, Aug. 15 in Rock Hill, S.C. before returning to Chapel Hill for an exhibitions against NCAA Tournament opponent Coastal Carolina (Aug. 18).
The 2012 regular season will open with the Tar Heels hosting Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Aug. 25. The Tar Heels will then host the Carolina Nike Classic and will open against NCAA Tournament team West Virginia on Friday, Aug. 31 and Boston University on Sunday, Sept. 2.
The 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference season will open with a visit from Virginia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The Tar Heels will hit the road for a midweek match against an NCAA Tournament squad in James Madison before opening a four-match home stretch against Wake Forest, Davidson, Virginia and Wofford.
The annual meeting against rival Duke will take place Friday, Sept. 28 in Durham.
A midweek visit from Georgia Southern (Oct. 2) precedes the most difficult road stretch of the year as Carolina will head to the Palmetto State for a pair of matches.
Carolina will take on Clemson in a conference match Friday, Oct. 5 before returning to South Carolina the next weekend for a match against the College of Charleston (Oct. 13).
In what should be the marquee match of the 2012 ACC season the Tar Heels will head to College Park, Md. for a match against Maryland Friday, Oct. 19.
Carolina will close out the regular season with a visit from Campbell (Oct. 23) followed by a trip to Raleigh to face rival NC State (Oct. 26). Boston College will come to Chapel Hill on Thursday, Nov. 1 for the regular season finale.
The 2012 ACC Championship will begin Nov. 5 on campus sites before the semifinals and finals take place at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.
For the second consecutive year the NCAA College Cup will be hosted at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
