OMAHA, Neb. -Rising junior Stephanie Peacock closed out Carolina's competition at the 2012 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle Sunday evening. Peacock's performance highilghted the 49 current, former and future Tar Heels competing at the meet.
Peacock's sixth-place finish in 8:30.97 was a career-best time as well as a new University of North Carolina long course record. "Stephanie had a great swim tonight in the finals of the 800-meter freestyle to finish sixth and improve her prelim time by almost four seconds to a new UNC record," head coach Rich DeSelm said. "This was a much more controlled swim early, and then stronger on the end. We are excited for Stephanie to swim so well and finish the Olympic Trials on such a high note."
2001 graduate Erika Erndl also competed Sunday evening in the 50-meter freestyle semifinals, finishing 11th in 25.37.
