CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Leah Wigger has been named assistant women's golf coach at the University of North Carolina announced Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. Wigger is replacing Patricia Earley who resigned to pursue other interests.
"Patricia was a tremendous asset to our program," says Mann. "While she will be greatly missed, I'm certainly excited for her. She is going to have an opportunity to spend more time with her family.
"I am extremely excited to have Leah Wigger join our women's golf program. Leah was my first signed recruit at the University of Virginia. She was a great collegiate player and has gone on to play professional golf reaching the LPGA. Leah's experience on tour will definitely assist our student athletes in reaching their full potential while at Carolina."
Wigger played collegiate golf at the University of Virginia, 2003-04 through 2006-07. Upon graduation, she played professional golf for the last five years, 2007-2012. In addition, she served as a volunteer coach on the Tar Heel staff this past year.
While at Virginia, Wigger carded 24 top-10 finishes including one win, the 2007 Liz Murphey Classic, and she was runner-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships. She was a four-time All-ACC performer (2004-07), two-time National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America (2006-07) and two-time Golfweek All-America (2006-07). She led Virginia in scoring all four years (2004-07) and was chosen the Cavalier Golf of the Year four times (2004-07).
Wigger excelled academically as well. She was named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Golf Team four times (2004-07) and was a four-time NGCA All-America Scholar (2004-07).
"I'm excited for this new opportunity to be a part of the University of North Carolina and the women's golf program," says Wigger. "I've always loved college athletics and the opportunities it brings to young athletes and I can't wait to help them pursue their goals and dreams as their assistant golf coach. Not only do I get to work with a great coach in Coach Mann, but also a great team that I've come to know through my experience as their volunteer assistant coach."
Wigger competed on the LPGA Futures Tour in 2007-08, 2011 and 2012 while playing on the LPGA Tour in 2009 and 2010. She has two wins to her credit, the 2008 American Systems Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla., and the 2012 Symetra Tour Island Resort Championship in Harris, Mich. She also participated in the U.S. Women's Open in 2007 and 2008.
