Carolina Opens Season Vs. Gardner-Webb
August 24, 2012 | Men's Soccer
The North Carolina men's soccer team will open its 2012 campaign Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
The Tar Heels are coming off one of the best seasons in school history after going 21-2-3 en route to the 2011 NCAA National Championship. Carolina lost five starters off of last year's national championship squad but return 13 lettermen.
Saturday's match will be the first meeting between Carolina and Gardner-Webb on the pitch.
Prior to and during the match, the Tar Heels will honor one of the most beloved student athletes in Carolina history, Kirk Urso, who passed away Aug. 5, 2012 in Columbus, Ohio.
Urso's No. 3 will be seen throughout Fetzer Field Saturday night as it will be painted on the field, sewn onto Carolina's jerseys and 500 t-shirts with No. 3 on them will be distributed to the students. Carolina Blue ribbons will also be provided to parents and other fans, while fans will have a chance to write memories, quotes or stories about Kirk that will be given to the Urso family.
