Murphy Earns Honors
September 4, 2012 | Men's Soccer
Senior forward Martin Murphy was named the ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading the Tar Heels to a pair of wins over the weekend.
Murphy tallied the lone goal in Carolina's 1-0 win over West Virginia on Friday when he struck in the 58th minute. Murphy connected on a one-touch volley after a cross from Danny Garcia to down the Mountaineers.
The Cary, N.C., native claimed his second game winner in as many matches on Sunday when he converted a penalty in the 68th minute to put Carolina in front of Boston University. After the Terriers scored a late goal, Murphy's tally went down as the game winner.
Murphy appeared in 24 matches a year ago, primarily in the midfield, but has made the move to forward this season and has already outdone his scoring total of a year ago when he scored one goal.
Murphy also earned a national honor this week when Top Drawer Soccer named the senior to its National Team of the Week for his two-goal week.
