North Carolina Fights Back For 3-2 Win Over VT

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 13 Tar Heels fought back for a gutsy win over Virginia Tech Saturday night, downing the Hokies 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-6) behind a 17-kill performance by Jovana Bjelica.
With Saturday's win, UNC improved to 18-1 and 7-1 in conference play. In addition to Bjelica's 17 kills, Leigh Andrew added 12 kills and 15 digs, and Kayla Berringer and Lauren Adkins each added another 11 kills.
The Tar Heels took set one 25-20, but fell behind after VT took set two, 25-21 and three, 25-22 as Carolina committed 14 errors in the two frames. VIT's Kathryn Caine and Lindsey Owens combined for 29 kills and four blocks, but UNC fought back to take set four, 25-22, and then took a decisive fifth set 15-6, hitting a solid .429 and committing no errors in the final frame.
Paige Neuenfeldt added six kills and three blocks for UNC, and Victoria McPherson had eight kills and a block.
Carolina returns to Chapel Hill next weekend, facing Maryland on Friday at 5 p.m. prior to Late Night with Roy at the Dean Smith Center. UNC then hosts ACC newcomer Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1 p.m. back in Carmichael Arena. Admission to both matches are free.
