No. 2 Tar Heels Mount Comeback To Beat No. 4 UConn
October 26, 2013 | Field Hockey
"I'm very happy for and proud of the Tar Heels for coming away with a scrappy win against a well-organized and well-coached UConn team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They gave us a lot to handle in the first half, and we made some adjustments at halftime and played much better in the second half. I credit our kids for maintaining their composure even though we were down at halftime."
UConn's goal came in the 16th minute when the Huskies were awarded a penalty stroke and Roisin Upton delivered to earn a 1-0 lead that would hold up through the half. It marked the first time this season that the Tar Heels have trailed heading into the locker room.
The Tar Heels had just five shots in the first half to four by UConn, but UNC more than doubled that after halftime with 12 shots in the final 35 minutes. Carolina was able to get two of them past UConn goalkeeper Sarah Mansfield, the first in the 44th minute. Junior Samantha Travers scored on a penalty corner, assisted by graduate student Janne Grove and sophomore Emily Wold, to tie the score at 1-1.
Freshman Kristy Bernatchez delivered the gamewinner in the 60th minute, shooting from a scramble in front of the cage after getting the ball from Wold. The goal was her fifth of the season and the first gamewinner of her career.
After assisting on both goals, Wold now has 20 assists on the year and leads the nation in that category.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a game on Sunday against No. 10 Old Dominion, which beat UConn 5-0 on Friday. "Obviously ODU is going to be tough at home," Shelton said. "It will be a great challenge for us."
Sunday's game will be the second matchup of the season between the Tar Heels and Lady Monarchs. The two played on Sept. 13 in Chapel Hill with UNC winning 3-0.
