Heels Host Georgia State Tuesday Night
November 4, 2013 | Men's Soccer
The Tar Heels have won two straight and four of its last five contests leading into Tuesday night against the Panthers. All four victories have come in ACC contests, including this past Friday's 1-0 shutout of then No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville.
Junior defender Jordan McCrary was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday in helping the defense post another shutout. Meanwhile on the offensive side of things, junior forward Tyler Engel notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season and third game winner of 2013 in the 11th minute against the Cavaliers.
The victory clinched a spot in the upcoming ACC Tournament that begins next Tuesday at campus sites throughout the ACC. Carolina is tied with Clemson for fourth in the league standings with 17 points.
Thanks to three shutouts in the last four matches, Carolina continues to lead the ACC by allowing only nine goals all year long, tied for the third-lowest number in the country.
Keeper Brendan Moore is tied for the league lead with eight clean sheets and his 0.55 goals against average is tops in the ACC. UNC has not allowed a goal in the last 234 minutes dating back to the first half of the UNCW game on Oct. 22.
Tuesday marks just the fifth meeting between North Carolina and Georgia State in men's soccer. The Tar Heels own a 3-1 record, but did fall 2-1 in the last game at Fetzer during the 1997 campaign.
Georgia State is 8-8-1 on the year, and is coming off a 4-1 loss to Incarnate Word last weekend.
Both home games this week against Georgia State and NC State will begin at 7 p.m., and are available to watch on GoHeelsTV.
