Henderson Wins Title At Reno TOC

RENO, Nev. --- Junior Evan Henderson defeated redshirting teammate Joey Ward to claim the title at 141 pounds to lead North Carolina to a third-place team finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions Sunday. Henderson defeated four straight opponents with pins before topping Ward in the final with a 7-2 decision.
Nathan Kraisser (125) and Nick Heilmann (149) were third place finishers for the Tar Heels, who finished behind Nebraska and Wyoming in the team competition. Christian Barber took fourth at 149, Troy Heilmann was sixth at 133 and Alex Utley was sixth at 184 to round out the placers for Carolina.
Henderson improved to 15-1 on the year in impressive fashion, as the sixth-ranked All-America made quick work of the competition at 141. The New Florence, Pa., standout registered four consecutive first period pins before topping Ward by decision in the final.
Kraisser rebounded from a 6-5 loss to No. 13 Tim Lambert of Nebraska in the semifinals to grab third place with an 11-4 decision over Joey Palmer. Nick Heilmann scored wins over opponents from Stanford and Wyoming before defeating teammate Barber in the third-place match. Heilmann's lone loss came by decision against No. 5 Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska.
The Tar Heels will break for Christmas before returning to action at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 1-2.
