Tar Heels Sweep Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. --- The North Carolina wrestling team put together one of its best overall performances of the year Sunday with a perfect 3-0 showing at the Pitt Duals. Carolina (5-4) defeated Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Clarion and created some positive momentum heading into the Atlantic Coast Conference opener Friday at Virginia Tech.
The Tar Heels opened the day with a 26-12 win over Buffalo that featured a pin from Evan Henderson, a technical fall from Alex Utley and major decisions from Troy Heilmann, Christian Barber and John Staudenmayer. After falling behind 3-0 after a loss a 125, Carolina rolled off three straight wins to take command of the dual at 14-3. Utley's 18-3 win over Tony Lock at 184 clinched the victory for UNC.
Carolina used the same formula to hold off Eastern Michigan in the second dual of the day. After Heilmann tied the score at 3 with a 4-0 win over Vincent Pizzuto at 133, Henderson and Barber scored back-to-back majors to give the Tar Heels an 11-3 lead. Wins from Staudenmayer and Scott Marmoll made it 18-6 and UNC was able to hold off the Eagles for an 18-16 win.
The Tar Heels dominated Clarion in the finale to wrap up an undefeated Sunday. Nathan Kraisser got things started with a first-period pin and Carolina never looked back. Henderson and Staudenmayer scored bonus points with major decisions and UNC rolled to a 32-4 victory.
Carolina will open ACC action this week as the Tar Heels travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech. UNC will then host its first dual of 2014 when Stanford comes to Carmichael Arena on Saturday. Admission is free to all spectators.
