UNC to Host Rematch with Wolfpack
February 21, 2013 | Women's Gymnastics
The Tar Heels will face in-state East Atlantic Gymnastics League rival NC State for the second meet in a row as Carolina hosts the Wolfpack Friday.
The Tar Heels are excited for the rematch in Carmichael, hoping to feed off of the energy of a home crowd.
"The team is eager to be back home," said head coach Derek Galvin. "We had two away meets in a row, so we're very much so looking forward to competing in front of our home crowd."
UNC (11-4) will be looking to even the rivalry record as NC State (10-4-1) edged the Tar Heels out in the Sweetheart Invitational Feb. 16. The Tar Heels combined for a 195.550 to place second behind the Wolfpack's 195.675. Carolina broke the team's season records on the uneven bars and balance beam, to contribute to the second highest overall team score of the season.
Senior and co-captain Elizabeth Durkac won the all-around for the third time this season, setting a new personal best with a 9.900 on the bars. For her performance, she was awarded EAGL Gymnast of the Week. Durkac was in good company as redshirt junior Michelle Ikoma and sophomore Janell Sargent also recorded personal bests on the bars and beam, respectively.
The Tar Heel's goal in training this week was to take back some of the points deducted by judges in the last meet.
"From whatever they took, we want .025 back," said Galvin. "If everyone on the team is successful in doing that, that's half a point. That separates good teams from great teams."
The meet will begin at 7 p.m., and admission is free.
