Carolina's 2V8 Leads The Way At ODU
March 25, 2013 | Women's Rowing
The UNC rowing team took to the water Saturday in Norfolk, Va., and claimed three of five races against host Old Dominion. Racing on the Lafayette River, the Tar Heels won the second varsity eight, the novice eight and the second novice eight races. They lost the varsity four by just half a second.
"We feel really good about the day," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We fought hard all the way down the race course and felt really good about what we accomplished - ODU is definitely a fast team."
Carolina's second varsity eight led the way, finishing its race in 7:46.2 to ODU's 7:51.3. The Tar Heel 2V8 was Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Kathryn McCormick, Katherine Summerton, Katie Burger, Emily Leidolf, Ali Margherio, SB Ritch, Claire Wardius and Julie Peterson.
UNC's novice boats won against ODU's third and fourth varsity eights. The Tar Heel lineups were:
Novice 8: Kylee Wooten (coxswain), Lauren Colberg, Addie Schoenberger, Victoria McGee, Chelsea Gustafson, Bridget Taylor, Jessica Cooper, Elise Widman, Emmy Johnson
Second novice 8: Jessie L'Amoreaux (coxswain), Emory Byrd, Ashley Long, Simone Biggers, Tatianna Blount, Jaisah Harrison, Danielle Joe, Liz Marshall, Reghan Horman
In the varsity four race, ODU crossed in 8:41.1 and UNC in 8:41.6. The Tar Heel lineup for that race was Elizabeth Ayers (coxswain), Sarah Giles, Steph Henrich, Amanda Stewart and Amanda Truesdell.
In the varsity eight, ODU finished in 7:29.5 and UNC in 7:42.2. Carolina's lineup was Allie Davis (coxswain), Jasmine Dennis, Morgan Koder, Sarah Priest, Lucie Kloak, Lindsay Newman, Tianna Williams, Maria Santoyo and Alex McClelland.
"The one I think we could've raced better in was our varsity eight and that's our premier boat so that's a little frustrating," Haney said. "But from a program standpoint I felt good about what we did.
"We were looking forward to this race and we're glad to have a successful day like we did. Now we're looking forward to Georgetown next weekend in DC."
The Tar Heels take on the host Hoyas Saturday on the Potomac River.
