Tar Heel Rundown: September 17
September 17, 2013 | General
The CAROLINA magazine app is now available for the iPad, which means you can read this morning's issue the way it was intended to be read. We'd love to hear your feedback on how we can make the publication more useful for you as a reader. Today's issue is the best-looking one yet and also has some pretty great content.
Football
ESPN's ACC power rankings suggest this weekend's game will be a big one in the tough half of the conference...More bowl projections (Sun and Belk)...You (trust me) don't want to sit through an entire press conference, so here's the handy 3-minute highlights of Monday's event, featuring Larry Fedora, Bryn Renner and Tim Jackson:
Basketball
Not sure how to feel about this news of a shakeup in the primary CBS basketball broadcast booth, with Greg Anthony likely moving into the Final Four analyst spot...Speaking of analysts, there are a lot of opinions on Dick Vitale, but he does indeed seem to be a genuinely good person...Danny Green surprised a middle school principal in his hometown.
Olympic sports
If you've heard a lot about the Crystal Dunn no-goal against Notre Dame that would've tied that match, it's at the 1:10 mark in this video and it's clear that it was a goal:
Good feature on volleyball graduate student Jovana Bjelica, in which I learned, among other things, that I've totally been pronouncing her name wrong in my head when reading the game stories. There's also more about her in today's CAROLINA.
Tar Heels in the NFL
Touchdown, Gio Bernard! It's been too long since we've heard that, but it was back again last night, as Gio dashed in from seven yards out for his first career NFL touchdown. Here's the video. Not much doubt about who he was pointing to in the sky after he fell into the end zone. That one was for Jossette Bernard. Bernard also added a touchdown reception in the game. If you only read one Gio story from last night, this is probably the one, which says "a star was born." How good was his performance? Only the best MNF show by a Bengals rookie in almost 40 years:
Giovani Bernard: 1st Bengals rookie with 2 offensive touchdowns on Monday Night Football since Stan Fritts in 1975

This link calls Bernard's playmaking ability one of the key differences in the game, and also has a cool video angle on Bernard's run (0:45 mark) plus video of the TD catch (2:15).
Even his old college quarterback enjoyed seeing it:
Congrats to @G_Bernard25 for his first career Touchdown on MNF. Couldn't happen to a better person. #131Turvey #GoHeels #tarheelnation

And if the old measure of success was getting on the front page of the paper, the 2013 measure is the front page of national sports sites. Mission: accomplished. Gio is front page news on three big-name sites this morning:

Quinton Coples was back at Jets practice this week. Rex Ryan says getting Coples back is important for the New York defense...Hakeem Nicks is "fine" after suffering a dislocated finger.
Today in Tar Heel history
Sept. 17, 1994: Carolina obliterated Tulane, 49-0, as Jason Stanicek etched his name even further into the Tar Heel football record book. Much more about this game in today's issue of CAROLINA.
Today's games
Men's soccer is at Campbell at 7 p.m. and free video is available.
Long read
This is an interesting Q&A on how ESPN arranges the network's college basketball schedule, why the basketball Gameday show doesn't have the same flexibility as the football show, and the amount of times the network is turned down for scheduling ideas (apparently, it's a lot).
