UNC To Face NC State, Michigan, and Towson
January 16, 2014 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After its win over NC State to open the season this past Sunday, the Carolina gymnastics team now faces a quick turnaround as they head to Raleigh on Friday, Jan. 17, to face NC State again in a four team invitational that also includes Michigan and Towson. The meet will be held in Reynolds Coliseum at 7 p.m.
Although the Tar Heels' first performance has gotten them off to a great start, the team plans to continue to train hard and remain focused on the road that lies ahead.
"Michigan is one of the top teams in the nation. NC State is [also] a very good team, and they're going to be a lot tougher," said Coach Derek Galvin, following Sunday's meet. "Going into this week, we knew we would have to be as strong mentally and emotionally as we were physically, and that's something we've been working on."
Top performers coming into Friday's competition include: Haley Watts, who earned second in the all-around on Sunday with a total score of 39.200; Lexi Cappallii, who was just named East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) Specialist of the Week for her stellar performance on vault, bars and floor; and Acacia Cosentino, who scored a 9.850 on bars, earning her a personal best and second place finish in her first meet back after a two year hiatus due to an Achilles injury.
UNC will return to action at home on Jan. 26, when they will face Maryland in Carmichael Arena at 2 p.m.
