Henderson Grabs Fifth At Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Evan Henderson finished fifth at 141 pounds to lead North Carolina to an 18th-place finish at the 2014 Southern Scuffle Thursday at UTC's McKenzie Arena. Henderson fell in the championship quarterfinals and lost a tight decision to the nation's top-ranked 141-pounder, but rebounded to thump Kent State's Tyler Small by major decision in the fifth-place match.
Henderson opened the day against Old Dominion's Chris Mecate, and it was No. 8 Mecate who avenged a pair of losses from earlier in the season with a 3-2 decision. The Tar Heel junior then bested Iowa State's Gabe Moreno in his first consolation bout before facing No. 1 Chris Dardanes of Minnesota. After a tight match, Dardanes prevailed 6-5, and Henderson took fifth with his 9-0 dusting of Small.
In other notable action, Troy Heilmann just missed an opportunity to wrestle for a top-8 position at 133 after he scored a pair of wins over Drexel's Kevin Devoy and Boston University's Dane Harlowe. At 149, Christian Barber topped Drexel's Noel Blanco by a 2-1 decision before falling to 12th-seeded Ruggierello of Hofstra. Alex Utley topped John Lampe of host Chattanooga 4-3 at 184.
Carolina returns to the mat Jan. 12 at the Pittsburgh Duals in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Tar Heels will face Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Clarion at that event.
