Carolina Visits Charlotte Sunday In NCAA 2nd Round
November 22, 2014 | Men's Soccer
Carolina advanced to Sunday with a 6-0 dismantling of James Madison in Thursday's first round match in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels tied their program record for most goals scored in an NCAA game, equalling the output scored against Winthrop in 2002.
First-team All-ACC forward Andy Craven scored three goals and assisted on a fourth in the victory over the Dukes, giving him a career-high seven points in a single game. He leads the conference in goals (14) and total points (32), and leads the nation with eight game-winning goals in 2014.
SERIES HISTORY
UNC leads 15-3 in the all-time series with Charlotte. The two programs have met twice previously in the NCAA Championship with Carolina winning both matches 1-0. The first matchup was an overtime victory in the 1991 first round. The second meeting was much more memorable in the 2011 National Championship match in Hoover, Ala.
Sunday's second-round game marks the first meeting between these two in-state schools since 2011. Ben Speas scored in the 65th minute, and the Tar Heels held off a late flurry from the 49ers to garner the second championship in program history.
SCORING LEADERS
UNC senior forward Andy Craven leads the ACC with 14 goals and 32 points. Charlotte junior forward Kyle Parker leads Conference USA with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists.
Carolina has scored 45 goals this season (2.4 per game), while Charlotte has found the back of the net 40 times (2.2 per game) in 2014. Both clubs have allowed only 16 goals this season.
