CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis program has announced the signing of two outstanding recruits, Bo Boyden and Anudeep Kodali, to National Letters of Intent during the recent fall signing period.
Bo Boyden, a native of Raleigh, N.C., has emerged as one of the nation's top junior players. He is a five-star recruit in the tennisrecruiting.net rankings and has been ranked as high as 25th in the nation.
Boyden was a finalist at the Boys' 16 Southerns in singles. In 2014, he was the Player of the Day at National Clay Courts where he made the round of 16. He also won the back draw of a National Open in Pennsylvania along with the tournament's sportsmanship award.
Bo won the doubles title at the Boys' 16s Southerns and also won a gold ball by winning the 2013 National Doubles Championships. He was also a doubles finalist at Winter Southerns as well a National Segment tournament.
Boyden led Wakefield High School to the 2014 team 4A state championship. He was also a state champion in singles. Boyden was also named the 2014 North Carolina High School Player of the Year and a National High School All-America.
“UNC had everything I was looking for in a team and I felt that it was the perfect fit for me. I think it is rare to find a top academic institution combined with one of the nation's best tennis programs,” says Boyden. “After spending time with the guys both on and off the court, I think this team is a true team in every sense of the word. They not only have great talent and tremendous coaches in Coach (Sam) Paul and Coach (Tripp) Phillips but this is a group that is truly committed to do what it takes to fight and win a national championship.”
“We are very excited that Bo is a Tar Heel. He comes from a great family that we have enjoyed getting to know, and Shane Wells and Brad Pomeroy at North Hills have done a tremendous job developing him into a very complete tennis player,” UNC head coach Sam Paul says. “You can see with his upward trajectory in the rankings that his best tennis is in front of him and we know he will do big things for the program. “
Anudeep Kodali, from Cary, N.C., is a blue chip recruit on tennisrecruiting.net and has been ranked as high as 21st in the nation. He has a wealth of international experience, traveling extensively on the ITF junior world tour as well as playing the top USTA junior tournaments, excelling in both singles and doubles.
In 2014, Kodali reached the singles finals of the Grade 4 ITF tournaments in Atlanta and Guatemala. He also made the round of 16 of the Grade 1 events in Tulsa, College Park, Thailand, and the Easter Bowl. He also won the USTA Southern L1 in Raleigh, N.C. as well as making the round of 16 at The U.S. National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
In doubles, Kodali won the USTA Boys' 16 Doubles National Championship in Kalamazoo, which earned him a gold ball and a berth in the Junior U.S. Open where he made the round of 16. On the ITF Circuit, Kodali won Grade 2 events in India and Canada, as well as making the semifinals of the Easter Bowl.
“Carolina has the best combination of academics and athletics in the nation. In addition to having one of the best undergraduate business schools in the country, the tennis program is poised to compete for the national title on a yearly basis. In choosing UNC I know I will have tremendous success on and off the court,” says Kodali.
“We are thrilled to have Anu join our program,” coach Paul says. “Not many players enter college with the kind of experience that he has, and without a doubt he has the foundation in place to become a fantastic player. He loves tennis and has huge aspirations for his game. He is the type of player any coach is excited to have the opportunity to work with and we are thrilled to have him and the Kodali family join our program. “
