Tar Heels Edged By The Citadel, 19-18
February 17, 2014 | Wrestling
The dual began at 197, and junior Frank Abbondanza fought a defensive, triple overtime battle to put Carolina on the board first. Abbondanza earned two escapes in regular time. He escaped and took The Citadel's Marshall Haas down in the second overtime period. Haas could not match the three points to prolong the bout, so Abbondanza won 5-3.
The Bulldogs quickly evened out the team score at 3-3 with Joseph Bexley's 6-4 victory over Bob Coe. Coe recorded a takedown in the first period and an escape in each of the other two periods.
At 125, Nathan Kraisser returned the momentum in Carolina's favor with a technical fall over Joaquin Marquez of The Citadel. Marquez's only point came as an escape in the second period. Kraisser earned a takedown and three near fall points in each of the three periods. He also recorded a reversal in the second period after selecting the bottom position to begin. Kraisser's 17-1 victory pushed UNC to a 8-3 lead.
Heilmann continued that lead at 133 with a pin over Aaron Hansen. The pin came 4:25 into the match. Heilmann had two takedowns and an escape in the match before pinning Hansen. Heilmann's six team points extended the Carolina lead to 14-3.
Undrakhbayar Khishignyam earned the only team bonus point for The Citadel with a 19-7 major decision over UNC senior Brian Bokoski. All of Bokoski's points came from escapes. The loss swung momentum in The Citadel's direction, decreasing the Tar Heels' lead to 14-7.
The Citadel won each of the next four matches by close decisions, earning the lead 19-14 after nine bouts.
At 149, Matthew Frisch defeated Christian Barber 5-2. At 157, Aaron Walker defeated Jacob Crawford 8-3. Barber's two points and Crawford's three points all came from escapes.
John Michael Staudenmayer lost in sudden victory overtime to The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj. Staudenmayer recorded two escapes in regular time to tie Luvsandorj's takedown.
Scott Marmoll fell 6-4 to Kenneth Radford at 174. Marmoll earned two escapes and a takedown in the match.
At 184, Alex Utley closed out the dual with a major decision victory for North Carolina over John Duane. Utley had four takedowns and one escape. He also earned a point for a stalling penalty against Duane and for riding time to win 11-2.
Utley's four team points were not enough for UNC, who fell 19-18 to The Citadel.
The Tar Heels return home for a doubleheader against new ACC opponent Pittsburgh and SIU-Edwardsville on Feb. 22 at Carmichael Arena.
