Rematch in College Park
February 20, 2014 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina gymnastics team (6-6) will travel to College Park, Maryland tomorrow, Feb. 21 to take on the Terrapins (6-3) for the second time this season at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels, now ranked sixth in the EAGL, seek to be the first team this year to defeat the Terps, ranked fifth, at home.
North Carolina is planning to enter Friday's meet strong. Coming off an inconsistent performance at NC State's Sweetheart Invitational last Saturday, the team has put in long hours this week to correct its necessary mistakes. The Tar Heels will be led by junior all-arounder Haley Watts. At NC State, Watts scored a 9.850 to tie her personal best on floor, and placed second overall with a combined score of 39.250 in all four events. Freshman Megan Marenghi also had a standout performance last week, for the second week in a row. She earned a new personal best on bars with a 9.825, and tied her personal best on beam with a 9.775. Other key contributors were Acacia Cosentino, Sarah Peterson, Margaret Brown and Janell Sargent, all of whom have had to step up due to health concerns on the team.
Maryland is coming off two wins and a first place finish at the tri-meet it hosted last Saturday with Bowling Green and Yale, extending its undefeated record at home. The Terrapins were led by Stephanie Giameo, who won the all-around for the second consecutive meet, and Karen Tang, who finished second in her first time competing in the all-around.
The last time the two teams faced off was on Jan.26, when the Heels hosted the Terps in Carmichael Arena for their second meet of the season. Carolina defeated Maryland by a score of 194.700 to 192.300. To date, the meet marks one of Carolina's best team performances of the season.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., when they host Towson University for their last home meet of the season.
