CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The sixth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team (10-2, 2-0 ACC) handed No. 46 North Carolina State (6-1, 1-1 ACC) its first loss of the season, defeating the Wolfpack 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels struck first in doubles and did not look back.
Kate Vialle and Laura Slater tallied Carolina's first doubles win, cruising to an 8-3 victory over Rachael James-Baker and Liza Fieldsend on court three. The Tar Heel duo of Jamie Loeb and Ashley Dai followed up by clinching the doubles point at No. 2, also by an 8-3 count.
The match on court one was suspended with Carolina's 12th-ranked pair of Caroline Price and Whitney Kay leading the Wolfpack's duo of Elisha Hand and Nicole Martinez 7-5.
In singles, the Tar Heels came away with a clean sweep that included four straight-set wins.
No. 67 Caroline Price got on the board first with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Nicole Martinez at the No. 3 spot. Eighth-ranked Hayley Carter followed up Price's victory with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set win over her own over N.C. State's Rachael James-Baker.
Tar Heel freshman Jamie Loeb, the top-ranked player in the country, sealed the match on court one by overwhelming Joelle Kissell, 6-1, 6-3.
In other singles results, No. 69 Whitney Kay claimed a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory on court four, and senior Tessa Lyons won 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 seed. Sophomore Kate Vialle finished the sweep for the Tar Heels, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph on court five.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Friday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center when they face ACC foe Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m.
