Tar Heels Race At Knecht Cup
April 14, 2014 | Women's Rowing
The Carolina rowing team joined nearly 70 other colleges at the regatta, where heats and semifinals took place on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
“Overall we were very pleased with our performance as a team this weekend,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “We felt like the varsity four raced well in their final so it was good to see our young group compete at that higher level. We also felt like our two novice eights raced well as we raced them up in higher events, the 2N8 in the N8 event and the N8 in the 3rd Varsity 8 event.
“The wind really picked up on by the time the two varsity eights raced on Sunday and although we raced as hard as we could, we felt we weren't able to give our best effort due to the high winds so we were disappointed in that aspect. Saying that, both eights advanced in placement from last year so that is very positive.”
The Tar Heel varsity eight was second in its heat on Saturday morning (6:59.71) and then third in its afternoon semifinal (6:47.62), narrowly missing a spot in the grand final. (The top two semifinals finishers went to the grand final, the third and fourth to the petite final.) In the petite final Sunday, the Tar Heels turned in a time of 7:00.02 for fifth.
The second varsity eight was third in its Saturday morning heat (7:16.57) to advance to the semifinals, where the Tar Heels turned in a PR of 6:59.44 to finish fourth and make the petite final. The Tar Heels' fourth-place time in the final was 7:06.01.
Racing in the third final on Sunday, the UNC varsity four took fourth place, finishing in 8:13.23. The Tar Heels were third in their heat Saturday morning (7:58.13) and then fifth in the afternoon semifinal (7:59.58) to earn a spot in the third final.
UNC also raced two novice eights. The top Tar Heel novice boat competed in the third varsity eight race, finishing fourth in its heat in 7:23.95. Carolina's second novice eight competed in the novice eight category, taking fifth in its heat in 7:48.14. Neither advanced out of the heats.
The Tar Heels now look ahead to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, which is set for May 17 in Clemson, S.C. In the month without a competition, the team will continue to train while finishing the semester. “We are off the road for a bit as the student-athletes wind down their spring semester,” Haney said. “We are excited about what we have accomplished this season and we are looking forward to finishing on an even higher note.”
