DALLAS, TEXAS - The final round of the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational was cancelled due to lightening in the area of play, cutting the tournament to 36 holes. Elizabeth Mallett led the Tar Heels to a third place finish, and topped the individual leaderboard taking first overall.
"Disappointed that the last round was cancelled and the team was unable to compete," commented Head Coach Jan Mann on the final day of play. "We would have liked to have battled for first place. We are very excited for Elizabeth Mallett and her individual victory."
North Carolina finished in third place carding a 21-over-par 579 only behind Baylor and LSU in the field of 15 teams. Mallett, a sophomore of Sutton Coldfield, England, fired a 3-under 141 two-day score and finished the tournament taking first place. Senior Jackie Chang of Scottsdale, Ariz., finished in 16th registering 7-over 151. Two Tar Heels, freshman Leslie Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, and sophomore Samantha Marks, from Maitland, Fla., tied for 28th place scoring a 10-over 154. Senior Katherine Perry, a native of Cary, N.C., ended in a tie for 44th recording a 12-over 156.
The 36-hole event was played at the Dallas Athletic Club, which featured a par 72, 6,264-yard layout. Round two results are attached. The SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational was the final tournament for North Carolina before post-season play in the ACC Championships from Apr 17-19.
