Tar Heels Turn In Top Performances At Occoquan Sprints
April 6, 2014 | Women's Rowing
The North Carolina rowing team raced at the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday, with the Tar Heels' top boats both finishing second in their finals after winning their heats.
"This was a great weekend of racing for Carolina Rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "I am very impressed with both the second varsity eight and the varsity eight, who both came in second in their respective events. They both raced incredibly well and nailed their race plan. They have been racing very well all season and we have been making small improvements throughout so it was great to see it all come together for us this weekend."
UNC's novice eight raced in the second varsity eight race as a "B" boat and the second novice eight competed in the top novice eight race. "It was great to see them race up and be competitive," Haney said. "Our varsity 4 also raced well as they are primarily young rowers as well entering in the varsity 4 category."
Racing on the Occoquan Reservoir in Occoquan, Va., the Carolina varsity eight's second-place time was 6:40.87. UNC won its heat in 7:02.45 to advance.
The second varsity eight won its heat in 7:19.39 and then finished second in the final in 7:10.73. The novice eight, racing up, was fourth in the same heat in 7:56.88 then seventh in the final in 7:35.58
The varsity four was fifth in its final in 8:19.28. The Tar Heels were second in their heat in 8:05.52.
The second novice eight, racing in the novice eight A final, finished third in a time of 7:59.83. The Tar Heels won their heat in 8:02.74.
The UNC men's club team also competed at the Occoquan Sprints. Carolina took second in the varsity eight final, third in the novice 8 A final and second novice eight B final.
