Howard and Whelan Win Events in Atlanta and Raleigh

ATLANTA - The University of North Carolina track and field teams were split today at the Georgia Tech Invitational and Wolfpack Last Chance, but that didn't stop the team from competing a high level.
Sarah Howard threw 53-4 ¼ (16.26 meters) to take first place in the women's shot put. Howard has thrown consistently over 53 this outdoor season.
Avana Story had another strong outing in the hammer throw as she took fourth place with a throw of 188-3 (57.39 meters).
Chris DiLorenzo threw 56-5 ¾ (17.21 meters) for a fourth place finish in the men's shot put.
Austin Vegas finished fourth in the men's pole vault after clearing 16-2 (4.93 meters).
Xenia Rahn finished fourth in the women's long jump but only jumped once and passed on the rest of her attempts. With her first attempt Rahn jumped 20-3 ½ (6.18 meters) and set a new personal record.
At the Wolfpack Last Chance multiple runners experienced similar success.
Elizabeth Whelan gathered her second collegiate victory in Raleigh this outdoor season with a first-place finish in the women's 800. Whelan timed in at 2:07.49. Not far behind was teammate Karley Rempel who came in fourth at 2:11.96.
Scott Morgan, Stephen Mulherin and Mitchell McLeod went three-four-five in the men's 5,000. Morgan timed in at 14:41.93, Mulherin at 14:56.96, and McLeod at 15:02.53.
Cori Floyd took fourth in the women's 400-meter hurdles and finished with a time of 1:01.61.
Mattie Blue set a new personal record in the women's 1,500 and took eighth with a time of 4:30.02.
The Tar Heels will resume action tomorrow at the Georgia Tech Invitational with events starting at 11 a.m. A recap of performances and full results will be available at the conclusion of the meet.
