Santoyo Earns ACC Rowing Honors
May 17, 2014 | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, S.C. - North Carolina senior Maria Santoyo earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors Saturday as the Tar Heels finished eighth at the expanded ACC Rowing Championship, held on Lake Hartwell. Virginia won the crown for the fifth year in a row and the 14th time in the 15-year history of the event. New conference members Notre Dame and Syracuse were second and third.
Virginia scored 80 points followed by Notre Dame (67), Syracuse (61), Clemson (48), Duke (41), Mimai (28), Boston College (23) and North Carolina (11).
"It was a great day of racing for us to finish off a great year," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "Our boats came off the water with what they felt was their best race of the season. We closed gaps on our ACC peers, from BC at Knecht Cup to today as well as gaps from ACCs last year to today.
"We are very proud of our team and what they have accomplished this year. It was a great season thanks to all of their hard work. This was a 'game changer' year for us because of their attitude and altruism. They gave everything over to the team and we couldn't have accomplished what we did without their selflessness."
