Heels In Holland: Chapter 2
June 2, 2014 | Field Hockey
On Saturday, we started the day off by going on a light jog around the city of Leiden where we will be staying for the time that we are in Holland. It was so pretty as the sun was rising and reflecting on the water of the canals. After the jog, we ate breakfast at the hotel and then we were on our way to the Field Hockey World Cup. We arrived around 10 a.m. and were able to watch almost four full games consisting of several men and women's international teams. It was amazing to watch the way the men played and the strength they had on and off the ball. While watching the games we met a group of men from England who painted the Dutch flag on our cheeks. Coach Shelton and her husband even received one too and the men joked about how Coach Shelton was the "coolest coach ever." We returned back to the hotel around 6 p.m. and then had a delicious dinner at one of the local restaurants around the hotel.
Sunday we started the day off with breakfast and then a bus ride over to the club field hockey field for a pre-game practice. After a light practice we went back to the hotel to rest, eat and prepare for our game later that day. During the time we were resting, we watched the USA vs. England field hockey match to cheer on our Tar Heels (Emily Wold, Kelsey Kolojejchick, Jackie Kintzer, Rachel Dawson and Katelyn Falgowski). It was really exciting to watch our team win against England 2-1 with Kelsey scoring the second goal. After the game finished we scrambled to the bus to get to the field for our game against a Holland club team. Although we lost the game 2-0, it was very fun for our team to experience a different style of play. Even though we lost, we learned a lot from the game and we can't wait to use what we learned in our next game. After we got back from the game we ate a delightful dinner at another local restaurant and called it a night for the Heels.
