Goodwin Up To The Task For Carolina Railhawks
July 1, 2014 | Men's Soccer
At the center of the Railhawks' success has been former Tar Heel record-setting net minder Scott Goodwin.
The Raleigh native started in goal in place of injured starter Akira Fitzgerald in both matches. Against Chivas USA, Goodwin made 11 saves in 120 minutes of regulation and overtime, and later saved three penalty kicks to secure a Railhawks' win.
On Tuesday, June 24, the Galaxy came to town for the third consecutive year and again Carolina got the better of the club led by Landon Donovan, the owner of the most goals in U.S. national and MLS history.
Goodwin again responded with an outstanding performance, coming up with eight saves and a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over the Galaxy.
After the match, Donovan gave high praise for the work Goodwin showed in keeping LA off the scoreboard.
"You have to give them a lot of credit," Donovan said. "99 times out of a hundred you win that game. [The RailHawks] had everything go their way tonight. They played well, they defended well and their goalie had one of the best performances I've ever seen. And they got the goal that they needed.
"We can't fault our effort. We gave everything, but everyone's been part of games like that in soccer. It's a crazy, cruel game sometimes."
Goodwin, the starting keeper for the 2011 Carolina national championship team, holds school records for minutes played, shutouts and goals-against-average.
The RailHawks will host FC Dallas in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup on July 9. FC Dallas boasts three former UNC standouts - Matt Hedges, Zach Loyd and Danny Garcia - on its roster.
