Tar Heels 14th At Powerade Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - The Carolina women's golf team fired a 308 in the final round of the Powerade Cougar Classic to finish in 14th place at 31-over-par 895. Senior Maia Schechter led the way for Tar Heels as she fired an even par 72 on Tuesday. The 23 teams fought the weather in the final round as lightning delays and heavy rain suspended play twice.
Schechter finished strong as she posted birdies on three of her last six holes (#1, #4, #5) to go along with four bogeys earlier in her round. The Takoma Park, Md. native finished with a 1-over-par 217 total to tie for 22nd place. Junior Elizabeth Mallett, sophomore Leslie Cloots and freshman Lexi Harkins all posted 11-over 227 totals to tie for 67th place. Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, carded a 6-over 78 on Tuesday with three birdies, seven bogeys and one double bogey. Harkins, from Crystal Lake, Ill., posted a 79 while Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, shot an 80. Bryana Nguyen, a freshman from Columbia, Md., carded a 6-over 78 to finish with a 235 total and tied for 100th.
Arkansas increased its lead of two strokes going into the final round to finish seven shots ahead of runner-up UCLA to capture the team title. The Razorbacks fired a 9-under 279 on Tuesday to finish at 18-under 846 while the Bruins carded a 4-under 284 to finish at 11-under 853. Duke finished in third place at 8-under 856 while Virginia and Mississippi State tied for 4th at 3-under 861. Wake Forest finished 6th at 862, Tennessee 7th at 4-over 868, UCF 8th at 7-over 871, NC State 9th at 9-over 873 and Georgia 10th at 21-over 885. Carolina finished in 14th place at 31-over 895.
Duke's Sandy Choi, who was 4th going into Tuesday's round, fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to finish at 11-under 205 to capture the individual title. There was a three-way tie for 2nd place at 10-under 206 between Wake Forest's Sierra Sims and UCLA's Alison Lee and Bronte Law. Leona MaGuire of Duke and Regina Plasencia of Arkansas are tied for 5th place at 8-under 208 while NC State's Augusta James and Mississippi State's Jessica Peng are tied for 7th at 6-under 210, and Arkansas' Summar Roachell and Wake Forest's Allison Emrey are tied for 9th at 5-under 211.
The 54-hole event was at Yeamans Hall, which features a par 72, 6,204-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action Sept. 21-23 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
