Chapel Hill, N.C – Carolina returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational in Washington, D.C. The Tar Heels will compete against two East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) opponents, George Washington and Pittsburgh, and two non-conference teams, Cornell and Temple. The meet will begin at 1 p.m in the Charles E. Smith Center.
This past Friday, the Tar Heels kicked off the season in impressive fashion by holding their own against nationally ranked No. 12 Auburn. UNC hopes to carry that momentum into the Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
“We had a good first meet,” said head coach Derek Galvin. “Of course there are areas we need to improve and I think we will improve as the season progresses. Auburn is one of the best teams in the country and I think our competitiveness against them last week will give us confidence heading into the next meet.”
During the first week of competition, several Tar Heels had standout performances. Senior Haley Watts won the all-around competition with a total score of 39.100. Watts placed in the top five in three of the four events: vault, bars and floor. She was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week.
Competing in her first collegiate meet, freshman Kaitlynn Hedelund recorded the highest score on the uneven bars, 9.825. Junior Lexi Cappalli had an impressive start, tying for second in the all-around competition with a score of 38.625.
This Weekend's Opponents:
• George Washington won the Beauty & Beast meet on Friday, Jan. 9, with a total score of 194.325. The Colonials are currently ranked 19th in the country.
• In its season opener, Pittsburgh fell to Ohio State, recording a score of 190.825.
• On Friday, Jan 10, Cornell finished fourth in a quad meet against Penn State, Rutgers and New Hampshire. The Big Red tallied a total score of 186.725.
• In a dual meet versus Eastern Michigan, Temple was defeated by a score of 193.25 to 187.200.
Following the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, UNC will return to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 7, when it faces William & Mary at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
