Carolina Cruises Past UT-Chattanooga For Third Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 6 North Carolina men's tennis team swept UT-Chattanooga 7-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in the first half of Monday's doubleheader. With the win, the Tar Heels move to 3-0 in the young dual-match season.
For the third straight match, the Tar Heels claimed the doubles point on courts two and three. The senior duo of Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro tallied Carolina's first doubles win on court two with a 6-2 defeat of Chattanooga's Luke Saunders and Nick Wingord. Sophomores Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider secured the point for the Tar Heels soon after, beating Austin Boaz and Derrick Brown 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Carolina's duo of Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur was able to fend off Chattanooga's scrappy tandem of John Peacey and Lucas Plesky in the third doubles match, 6-4.
The Tar Heels proceeded to rattle off six straight-set singles wins to finish off the Mocs.
Freshman Robert Kelly got off the court first for Carolina, earning his third career dual-match singles win in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over John Peacey at the No. 6 spot. Clark then extended the Tar Heels' lead to 3-0 with 6-2, 6-1 victory on court three. Hess-Olesen clinched a Carolina victory on court two, recording a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Nick Wingord.
Second-ranked sophomore Brayden Schnur, along with Murray and Steiro, pushed the Tar Heels' final score to seven with three more convincing singles wins on courts one, four and five, respectively.
The Tar Heels will tackle the second half of Monday's doubleheader when they face the Howard Bison at 3 p.m.
