UNC to Take on Towson, William & Mary and West Chester

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina gymnastics team heads to Towson, Md. on Sun, Jan. 25 to compete in the first quad meet of the season. The Tar Heels will take on Towson, William & Mary and West Chester at 4 p.m. in the SECU Arena.
"The team has had a good week of training and we have been able to focus on some of the little things that needed corrections from last weekend," said head coach Derek Galvin.
This past Sunday, the Tar Heels competed in the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, where they defeated Temple, Cornell and Pittsburgh, but were narrowly edged out by No. 19 George Washington. Carolina posted a final score of 194.550, the highest of the season. UNC hopes to carry this momentum into this weekend's competition.
During the meet, several gymnasts recorded standout performances. Junior Sarah Peterson recorded a career best score of 9.900 on the vault. Freshman Morgan Lane tied for second in the all-around competition with a score of 39.200. Lane was awarded the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week for her stellar performances on bars, floor and vault. Freshman Kaitlynn Hedelund posted a 9.825 on the uneven bars, which tied for first among all competitors.
"We are excited about competing this weekend. We are looking forward to developing a strategy through [these multi-team meets] which will help us in the postseason," said Galvin.
This weekend's opponents:
-On Sat, Jan. 18, Towson took on William & Mary and were defeated 193.550-193.125. The Tigers stand at 1-2 coming into this week's competition.
-William & Mary stands at 1-0 following their defeat of Towson. After winning the all-around competition with a score of 38.825, Larson Lasek was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Gymnast of the Week.
-In a dual meet versus SUNY-Cortland, West Chester won by a score of 188.000-185.225. This week, Selena Swanger was awarded the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Coaches Choice Award after winning the all-around competition and posting a third-place finish on the beam.
Following Sunday's competition, the Tar Heels will return to action on Sat, Jan. 31 when they head to Raleigh, N.C. to take on NC State, West Virginia and William & Mary. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
