Heels Spend Time At UNC Lineberger Cancer Center
October 16, 2015 | Men's Soccer, Carolina Outreach
The team was divided up into four groups and went room-to-room spending time with patients and their families, and signed posters for the patients to hang in their rooms.
For senior Raby George, a midfielder from Sweden, it was time well spent with his fellow UNC student-athletes.
“It was an incredibly humbling experience for me as an individual and for us as a team,” said George. “I believe it made many of us realize that the word adversity is used very casually in today's societies. What some might refer to as adversity is nothing in comparison to what these people go through each day. They fight each day, just to be able to see their children grow up and to be next to them.
“This experience helped me realize the true value of life and if making a couple people smile today helped in any way, I am extremely happy to have been able to be there for them. I believe in giving back to the people around us, and a small act of kindness can go a long way.”
Organized by fellow senior Jonathan Campbell, the Greensboro native echoed similar thoughts that George said earlier about having these unique opportunities afforded to Carolina student-athletes.
“Our team had a great time visiting cancer patients in the hospital,” Campbell said. “Just asking how they are doing brightens their day because they might not see any visitors for days. It made me really happy that we could get the team together to help out our UNC community and I look forward to doing it in the future.
“I hope the patients enjoyed our company and I think we have some new UNC soccer fans!”
