Five Tar Heels Score in 5-1 Win At VCU
October 18, 2015 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. – The third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team got goals from five different players en route to a 5-1 win at VCU Sunday afternoon. UNC improved to 13-1 on the season with the win, while VCU fell to 4-10.
“I'm proud of our team,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “We started a little slow – credit to VCU for that. But we were able to get moving, get scoring from a lot of different players, and earn the win.”
The win was the 600th for UNC's Karen Shelton, who is in her 35th season as the Tar Heels' head coach and now has a career record of 600-151-9, all at North Carolina.
“The win I'm more interested in today is #13, because that's how many we have this season,” Shelton said. “The thing I do appreciate about this milestone, though, is how many talented and hard-working student-athletes played a part in those 600 wins. The tradition of excellence we have in our program and the success that we've had over the years goes back to the players who play or have played here, all the proud Tar Heels on this year's team and every year before this one.”
Shelton is the second coach in NCAA Division I history to reach 600 career wins. Connecticut coach Nancy Stevens earned her 600th win earlier this season, her 37th as a head coach.
Coming off a 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference win over Duke on Friday, UNC got the gamewinner at VCU in the 12th minute of play Sunday on a goal from junior Lauren Moyer. She got her stick on a loose ball in front of the cage and put it in to give UNC the advantage for good.
In the 19th minute, freshman Malin Evert added another, scoring from just in front of the cage to make the score 2-0 at halftime.
Just 51 seconds into the second half, the Tar Heels made it 3-0 on a goal by sophomore Gab Major, who scored off a pass from freshman Eva van't Hoog.
In the 42nd minute, senior Casey Di Nardo scored after she grabbed a rebound following a VCU save of her first shot. The put-back was her ninth goal of the season and made the score 4-0.
Senior Emily Wold scored UNC's fifth goal just 43 seconds later, creating her own opportunity and scoring from the left side of the cage.
The Rams' goal came in the 54th minute. Jamee Albright scored, assisted by Taleah Scott.
Next up for UNC is an ACC game on Friday at Wake Forest.
