October 5, 2015 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina women's golf team will host the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational starting on Friday, October 9. The annual tournament features some of the best teams in the nation competing at the prestigious UNC Finley Golf Course.
“We feel fortunate that our weather is looking good for the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational,” head coach Jan Mann said. “Unfortunately, the men were not as lucky and had to cancel their home tournament last weekend. I am confident that our Finley maintenance staff will have the course ready for our event. The Ruth's Chris Tar Heel attracts the top collegiate teams and this year is no exception. There will be 18 teams competing over the weekend so I encourage our Tar Heel fans to come out to enjoy the beautiful weather and watch some great golf.
“Our entire team is excited to be competing on our home course. It is a great opportunity for everyone to be involved with the tournament in that we will have five student athletes competing for the team and three competing as individuals. Along with our parent and fan support, our team has extended invitations to their professors to come out and watch. We are looking forward to a great weekend.”
North Carolina will field Bryana Nguyen, Elizabeth Mallett, Leslie Cloots, Lexi Harkins and Kelly Whaley in the team's scoring five. Rachel Jones will compete in her third consecutive tournament this year as an individual, and Cheni Xu and Killian Casson will have their season debut as individuals. Casson will be competing in her first collegiate tournament.
The Tar Heels will host Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Rollins, Tennessee, UNC-Wilmington, Oregon, Alabama, Kentucky, LSU, Baylor, Louisville, Michigan State, Auburn, South Carolina and Arkansas. 13 teams of the 18-team field are ranked in Golfweek's top-50 rankings. Duke returns as the defending champion of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational.
In last year's tournament, the North Carolina women finished 10th overall in another stacked field. 14 teams are returning to the tournament while the only newcomers are Kentucky, UNC-Wilmington, Tennessee and Baylor.
Live stats will be provided on Golfstat.com. Teams will be teeing off holes No. 1 and 10 beginning at 8:51 a.m. off No. 10 and 9:09 a.m. off No. 1 with nine minute intervals between each group. Sunday will be a shotgun start.
The UNC Finley Golf Course features a par 72, 6,379-yard layout. The tournament will run October 9-11. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
