GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Teams were announced Thursday by the ACC Office. Four Tar Heels were named to the All-ACC Teams and another two Tar Heels were tapped for the All-Freshman Team.
Senior midfielder Katie Bowen of Auckland, New Zealand, was named to the first team for the second successive year. She was joined on the first team by sophomore forward Jessie Scarpa of Lakeland, Fla. Scarpa was an All-Freshman selection a year ago.
Junior midfielder Joanna Boyles of Raleigh, N.C., was tapped for the second-team All-ACC Team for the second consecutive year. Senior forward Alexa Newfield of Decatur, Ga., was tapped for the third-team All-ACC squad.
Carolina had two Tar Heels named to the conference's All-Freshman Team - defender Julia Ashley of Verona, N.J. and midfielder Dorian Bailey of Mission, Kan.
Bowen is a four-year starter for the Tar Heels and two-time team captain. This past summer she started in the midfield for the New Zealand National Team at the 2015 World Cup in Canada. She has started all 18 games for the Tar Heels in 2015, playing both midfield and defense. She ranks third on the team in minutes played (1,320).
As a part-time starter in 2014 due to various injuries, Scarpa has enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2015. Starting at forward in all 18 games, she leads the Tar Heels in points with 21 and in assists with seven. She is tied with Summer Green for second on the team with seven goals.
Boyles is one of the most consistent Tar Heels have started this year at both attacking center midfield and holding center midfield. Boyles has started 16 games and played the team's fifth most minutes at 1,113. She is Carolina's fourth-leading scorer with four goals and four assists for 12 points.
Newfield has bounced back from three years of injuries to excel as a sixth-year senior for Carolina. She has played in 16 games and leads Carolina in goals scored with nine, including two game-winners. She also has two assists for 20 total points.
Both Ashley and Bailey have had excellent freshman campaigns. Ashley has started in the defense from the start of the season, appearing in all 18 games. She ranks second on the team in minutes played with 1,608. Bailey played in 13 games this year before suffering a knee injury. She started eight games and had two goals and three assists. Both of her goals were game-winners against Nebraska and Syracuse.
