MLS Playoffs: Full Of Tar Heels

Captained by former Tar Heel standout Dax McCarty, the New York Red Bulls moved to the Eastern Conference Championship with a 1-0 result Sunday, and 2-0 on aggregate, over D.C. United, sending their oldest rivals home for a second consecutive postseason.

The Red Bulls will face the Columbus Crew beginning on Sunday, Nov. 22 in Columbus, Ohio.
The Crew is led by sporting director & head coach Gregg Berhalter, a former Carolina star, and midfielder Ben Speas, who was a key figure in the Tar Heels run to the 2011 NCAA Championship.
Over in the Western Conference, FC Dallas will face the Portland Timbers. FCD's two center backs are UNC alums - Matt Hedges and Zach Loyd.
It took penalty kicks for FC Dalls to advance past the Seattle Sounders. The series finished 3-3 on aggregate after a 2-1 final score on Sunday night. FCD moved through with a 4-2 edge in penalties over the Sounders.
