Carter Secures Win For #1 Tar Heels

North Carolina (12-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after straight-set wins from No. 8 Jamie Loeb on court one and 15th-ranked Caroline Price on court three.
But the Yellow Jackets were not going down without a fight. Their deficit was trimmed to 3-1 with a Kendal Woodard victory over No. 76 Whitney Kay on court four.
Carter, ranked 19th nationally, was forced to mount a comeback on court two versus No. 67 Johnnise Renaud, who took the opening set, 6-4 and led for a time in the second set, before Carter dug deep for a 6-3 win. She rode the momentum into set three and cruised to a 6-3 victory to clinch the victory for the Tar Heels.
On court five, No. 68 Ashley Dai won the first set, 6-1. She gave back the next, 6-4, to Megan Kurey, but waisted little time in winning 6-1 in the third set to put UNC up 5-1 over the Yellow Jackets.
No. 116 Kate Vialle had her own three-set battle on Friday, dropping the opening set, before sending the match to a third set where Georgia Tech picked up its second point to close out the match.
North Carolina enjoyed an early lead in all three doubles matches, and it was race to who would garner victories to earn the opening point.
The 20th ranked duo of Dai and Vialle wound up winning the sprint on court two with an 8-5 victory. Not long after, the 11th ranked tandem of Price and Loeb won by an identical 8-5 score.
For good measure, No. 22 Carter and Kay led 7-4 when the doubles point was clinched by the Tar Heels.
UNC hosts Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
