Tar Heels Charge Past Virginia Tech for Third ACC Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 1 North Carolina continued its winning ways Sunday afternoon in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center where the Tar Heels defeated No. 41 Virginia Tech 7-0.
UNC moved to 6-0 at home with the victory and pushed its record to 13-0 overall, one of the best starts in program history.
Carolina secured the doubles point after getting wins at No. 3 and No. 1 spots. Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay cruised past Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar 8-1 to finish first at No. 3, then Jamie Loeb and Caroline Price secured an 8-1 win at No. 1 over Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita.
Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle led 7-2 at No. 2 before the Tar Heels secured the doubles point and the set was left unfinished.
Carolina swept through the singles matches without dropping a single set by controlling all the matches early. Every Tar Heel jumped out to an early lead before winning their match in two sets.
Vialle was the first to post a singles win for the Tar Heels, 6-0, 6-1, over Nandakumar at the No. 6 spot.
Eighth-ranked Loeb then closed out her No. 1 singles win 6-0, 6-1 over Ilinca Stoica.
Kay continued her impressive day, racing past Cerezo-Codina 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to clinch the win for UNC.
Dai was next to finish at No. 5 after she wrapped up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kelly Williford, then 19th-ranked Carter stormed past Fusinato for a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
15th-ranked Price faced the toughest challenge of the day at No. 3 singles. After winning the first set, she faced a second-set tiebreaker against No. 104 Caroline Daxhelet. With the score tied at 4-4, Price reeled off three-straight points, including a forehand winner on match point, to seal the tiebreaker and the sweep at 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Tar Heels now prepare for a four-match road trip, starting with two matches at Charlotte on March 7, followed by two ACC matches at Notre Dame and Louisville.
