Tar Heels Roll NC Central 6-0, Improve To 8-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The seventh-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team blanked NC Central 6-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in the final match of Wednesday's doubleheader. Carolina improves to 8-1 on the spring campaign with the win, while the Eagles drop to 0-2. In the first half of Wednesday's doubleheader, UNC vanquished Campbell 4-1.
The Tar Heels were able to gain an early 1-0 advantage by claiming the doubles point in short order. Junior Brett Clark and freshman Robert Kelly notched UNC's first doubles victory on court one by cruising past the Eagles' Kert Kilumets and William East, 6-1. On court three, Carolina's duo of junior Stuart DePaolo and senior Oystein Steiro overwhelmed Tamina Kienka and Jamal Hoyte by an identical 6-1 score to secure the team point.
Sophomores Jack Murray and Brayden Schnur led NC Central's pair of Daniil Gerasimov and Fabrice George 4-2 when the point was clinched.
In singles play, UNC rattled of five straight-set victories before the match was called. Kelly, playing at the No. 3 singles spot, earned the Tar Heels' first singles triumph with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 performance against the Eagles' Jamal Hoyte. Oystein Steiro proceeded to extend the Tar Heels' lead to 3-0 on court four, defeating Fabrice George 6-1, 6-1. In the match-clincher, redshirt junior Andrew Gores registered a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court six.
DePaolo and Murray tacked on two more wins for the Tar Heels before the match was put in the books.
“In tonight's match, I think we played with more intensity, purpose and focus in the singles,” said UNC head coach Sam Paul. “We have to get healthy and have four more really good days at practice before we leave for ITA Indoors.”
The Tar Heels will be back in action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 13-16 at Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago, Ill.
