Carolina Completes The Sweep Of Boston College
March 15, 2015 | Softball
Chapel Hill, N.C. – North Carolina softball took both games of a hard fought doubleheader against Boston College on Sunday afternoon, completing the sweep and improving to 5-0 in ACC play and 11-0 at home.
Game One
The Tar Heels were the first on the scoreboard after Kristen Brown doubled to left center to bring in Aquilla Mateen in the bottom of the first. Brown would then score on a Jenna Kelly single to make it 2-0 UNC.
Boston College would pick up a run in the third but Carolina answered back with a three-run homer by Brown in the bottom of the inning, expanding the lead to 4-0.
The Eagles would take the lead behind a six-run, five-hit top of the fourth. Sydney Matzko replaced starter Kendra Lynch midway through the inning and would finish the game, picking up four K's.
North Carolina would not stay down for long though, as Kati Causey blasted a grand slam and Kristen Brown knocked her second home run of the day and just like that it was 10-5 UNC after four innings of play.
The Tar Heels would put the game away in the sixth after BC walked Jenna Kelly with bases loaded, bringing another run. Kendra Lynch would follow her with a grand slam, giving UNC the win, 15-7.
Game 2
In complete contrast to game one, game two was the definition of a pitchers' duel.
Sydney Matzko pitched 7.1 innings, allowing one hit while fanning two and walking four. Her BC counterpart, Jessica Dreswick, pitched 7.1 innings as well, allowing four hits while walking five batters, giving up one run.
The game was scoreless after seven innings, with neither team able to get momentum going at the plate.
Aquilla Mateen singled with one out in the eighth and was followed by Kristen Brown who walked. Amber Parrish doubled down the left field line at the next at bat, bringing in Mateen and giving Carolina the 1-0 win in extra innings.
The Heels will be back in action at home on Tuesday against UNCG at 4 p.m.
