Novice Rowers Successful At Old Dominion

North Carolina's novice eight and second novice eight boats beat host Old Dominion Saturday morning, providing the day's highlights as UNC fell in all three varsity races.
Racing on the Lafayette River, the Tar Heel novice eight turned in a time of 6:49.98 to beat the Lady Monarchs (7:21.43). The second novice eight rowed a time of 7:09.69 to ODU's 7:32.59.
UNC's novices also raced in a four, falling to ODU's second and third varsity fours.
“On the novice side, we were proud that they rowed their race plan well
and you see that in the results,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “We can still clean up the boats to be more effective, but are proud of their intensity and attack.”
The varsity didn't fare nearly as well. In the varsity eight, ODU finished in 6:29.07 and UNC in 6:35.66. The second varsity eight race saw ODU finish in 6:35.72 and UNC in 6:41.74. The varsity four was ODU in 7:23.16 and Carolina in 7:38.73.
“We were very disappointed in our effort and attack,” Haney said. “We row and have raced better this year and we were looking for that same, if not improved, execution. We will work hard this week to make sure we do not repeat this weekend's performance.”
The Tar Heels have a busy weekend ahead of them. On Saturday, they'll take on West Virginia and host Georgetown in Washington, D.C. On Sunday it's on to the Occoquan Sprints.
