Carolina Women Golfers Finish 14th At Bryan Park

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot a 314 in the final round of the Bryan National Collegiate to finish in 14th place with a 934 total. The Tar Heels were on Sunday by Lexi Harkins and Leslie Cloots who both fired a 5-over-par 77 at the par-72 Bryan Park Champions Course.
Harkins, a freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill., fired four birdies, seven bogeys and one double bogey en route to her 77. She tied for 31st with a 14-over 230 total. Sophomore Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, finished two strokes back at 16-over 232 in a tie for 43rd. Cloots carded two birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey for her 77. Freshman Cheni Xu, from Zhuhai, China, tied for 53rd place with a 19-over 235 total after posting an 81 in the final round.
Senior Maia Schechter and freshman Bryana Nguyen both carded an 8-over 80 on Sunday. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., finished with a 239 total to tie for 67th while Nguyen, from Columbia, Md., tied for 71st with a 240 total. Rachel Jones, a sophomore from Asheboro, N.C., competed as an individual and finished 90th with a 255 total after carding an 81 on Sunday.
Virginia captured the team title, winning in a two-hole playoff over Wake Forest as both carded a 301 in the final round to finish at 36-over 900. Vanderbilt finished two strokes back in third place with a 902 total while Florida finished fourth at 904, Florida State finished fifth at 905 and Kentucky finished sixth at 906. Louisville and Notre Dame tied for seventh place at 909 while Auburn finished ninth at 911 and Michigan State 10th at 912.
Briana Mao of Virginia captured the individual title at even par 216 after firing an even par 72 in the final round. Kelli Murphy of Auburn and Sierra Sims of Wake Forest both finished one stroke back at 1-over 217 after firing a 3-under 69 on Sunday. Florida's Karolina Vickova and Vanderbilt's Jenny Hahn tied for fourth place at 4-over 220 while Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck and Notre Dame's Talia Campbell tied for sixth place at 6-over 222.
The 54-hole event was played at the Bryan Park Champions Course, which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action April 17-19 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
