Two Tar Heel Boats Medal At Dad Vail Regatta
May 10, 2015 | Women's Rowing
The UNC rowing team wrapped up a successful two days of racing Saturday at the Dad Vail Regatta with a first place by the novice four and a third by the second varsity eight.
The novice four beat second-place Central Oklahoma by more than seven seconds, finishing in 7:32.79. Massachusetts was third and Clemson was fourth ahead of Bowdoin and St. Thomas.
The second varsity eight finished in 6:49.03, behind Massachusetts and Bucknell. Drexel, St. Joseph's and Delaware came in fourth through sixth places.
“I was very happy for our second varsity eight and the way they attacked this weekend,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “They were never complacent with their practices this week and were always striving for more. They made a decision to medal and they made it happen.
“We were happy with the novice four performance as well as they attacked their race plan. They adapted after each race to gain more speed and they were able to accomplish that every time.”
All of the UNC boats performed well enough in Friday's heats to reach the semifinals on Saturday. The novice four and second varsity eight were able to advance on to the finals. The varsity eight finished sixth in its semifinal, the varsity four sixth in its semifinal and the novice eight fourth in its semifinal.
“It was a good solid performance for all of our boats this weekend and we will now use this to prepare for ACC's next weekend,” Haney said.
The 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship is set for Friday and Saturday, May 15-16, in Clemson, S.C.
