May 16, 2015 | Women's Rowing
UNC won three of its five races on Saturday and finished eighth overall at the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship, held on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. Third-ranked Virginia won the grand final in all five events to claim its 15th ACC title in 16 tries. Notre Dame was second and Syracuse finished third.
Junior Victoria McGee represented UNC on the All-ACC teams, earning second-team honors.
The championship kicked off on Friday with heats. Based on those results, UNC was in the petite final in each event on Saturday.
“I was really proud of the third varsity eight, second varsity four and the varsity four for winning the petite finals,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “I am also proud of the second varsity eight for a tough battle and coming in second in the petite final. Although it was not the results we want in the varsity eight race, I was proud that they took some seconds off from BC from when we saw them at the Knecht Cup."
In the petite final for the third varsity eight, the first race of the day, UNC beat Duke in a time of 7:09.1. The Tar Heels earned another win in their second race of the day, with the second varsity four finishing in 7:55.0, again ahead of Duke.
UNC also won the petite final for the varsity four, with the Tar Heels finishing in 7:44.5 ahead of Duke and Miami.
Carolina placed second in the petite final for the second varsity eight. BC crossed first in 6:55.8 with UNC second in 7:03.3 and Miami third.
In the varsity eight petite final, UNC placed third behind Boston College and Miami in 7:00.3.
“Overall it was a great weekend of racing and we are really proud of how our team represented Carolina Rowing this season and this weekend,” Haney said.
