UNC Women Golfers Move Up To 14th At NCAA Regional

Six of the teams experienced a three-hour suspension of play due to lightning and weather issues. The Tar Heels, however, had completed their round when play was suspended.
Harkins, from Crystal Lake, Ill., fired four birdies and six bogeys e en route to her 74. She is tied for 33rd place with a 6-over 150 total. The other four Tar Heels all fired a 4-over 76 on Friday highlighted by a hole-in-one for freshman Cheni Xu on the par-3, 164-yard ninth hole by hitting a 9 iron with 23-degree rescue club.
Another freshman, Bryana Nguyen, fired one birdie, three bogeys and one double bogey for her 4-over 76. The Columbia, Md. native is tied for 44th place with an 8-over 152 total. Maia Schechter, a senior from Takoma Park, Md., is one stroke back at 9-over 153 and is tied for 51st after posting two birdies, two bogeys and two double-bogeys. Sophomore Leslie Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, carded an 11-over 155 and sits tied for 66th. Xu, from Zhuhai, China, has a 15-over 159 total and is tied for 86th place.
Duke fired a 1-over 289 in the second round for a 1-over 576 total to hold onto the lead going into the final round. Purdue is five strokes back in second place at 6-over 582 after shooting a 299 on Friday. Wake Forest is in third place at 9-over 585 while Arizona is fourth at 10-over 586, UC Davis is fifth at 13-over 589 and Tulane is sixth at 17-over 593. Harvard and Oklahoma State are tied for seventh with 594 totals, host Notre Dame is ninth at 595 and Kent State is 10th at 598.
Celine Boutier of Duke held onto the individual lead after carding an even par 72 for a 5-under 139 total. Her Blue Devil teammate, Leone Maguire, is two strokes back in second place at 4-unver 140 after firing a 4-under 68 in the second round. Lindsey Weaver of Arizone is in third place at 3-under 141 and Michaela Fletcher of Memphis is fourth at 2-under 142. Three players are deadlocked in fifth place at 1-under 143 – Purdue's August Kim and Wake Forest's Sierra Sims and Marissa Dodd. Isabelle Johansson of Kentucky and Paige Lee of UC Davis are tied for eighth place at even par 144.
The final round of the NCAA South Bend Regional will be played Saturday at the Warren Golf Course, which features a par 72, 6,301-yard layout. Final-round play begins Saturday morning at 8:00 off both the #1 and #10 tees. The Tar Heels begin teeing off the #10 tee at 8:54. The top six teams and top three individuals not on those six teams advance on to the NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
