No. 2 UNC Tops No. 17 Iowa, 2-1
August 30, 2015 | Field Hockey
In both games, UNC led 2-0 before giving up a goal. On Saturday, the game was still scoreless at halftime, but on Sunday Carolina struck quickly. Just 2:37 into the game the Tar Heels got on the board on a penalty corner goal by senior Nina Notman. Freshman Eva van't Hoog (push in) and senior Emily Wold (stick stop) assisted on the play.
Wold scored UNC's second goal just over a minute before halftime. She carried the ball into the circle from the left side and beat Iowa goalkeeper Alexandra Pecora to put her team up 2-0.
The Hawkeyes' goal came 1:08 after halftime. On a penalty corner, Chandler Ackers' goal was called off for being too high, but after video review by the umpires it was decided that the shot was legal and the score would stand.
“We got off to a great start and scored in first couple minutes and that was fantastic,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “We created lots of chances and did a nice job of controlling the game. What was disappointing is that we came out of halftime flat. Credit to Iowa – they were fired up. They got a goal early and then it was back and forth after that. We had plenty of opportunities.
“But we came away with a win. It was important for our team to travel well and win on the road, which we did. We left a lot of opportunities out there but we hung on for a win.”
UNC outshot Iowa 14-4, including 7-1 in the first half. The Tar Heels had an 11-1 advantage on penalty corners, with Iowa scoring on its only opportunity.
Tar Heel goalkeeper Shannon Johnson finished with two saves in 70 minutes. Pecora had six for the Hawkeyes.
“We're not as disciplined as we need to be,” Shelton said. “It was a good opening weekend and it's what we want – we want to be shown the areas we need to improve upon to be a better team, and that happened. We have to be more disciplined and we have to work harder.”
Next up for Carolina is another weekend on the road. The Tar Heels play at No. 15 Princeton on Friday and then travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel next Sunday. Their first home game of the fall is Sept. 18 against Louisville.
