Tar Heels Bounce Back With 4-2 Win At No. 7 Albany
September 13, 2015 | Field Hockey
ALBANY, N.Y. – On the heels of the season's first loss, the second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team bounced back Sunday for a 4-2 win at No. 7 Albany. The Tar Heels are now 5-1 heading into their home opener Friday. The Great Danes fell to 3-1.
Playing at Albany's Alumni Turf, senior Emily Wold scored twice and assisted on the other two goals, which were scored by senior Nina Notman and freshman Eva van't Hoog.
Wold's first goal came just 3:30 into the match, off a rebound after the first shot on a penalty corner was saved. Notman's goal made it 2-0 just over three minutes later. She scored on another penalty corner, assisted by Wold and van't Hoog.
The Tar Heels maintained the shutout until a few minutes before halftime, when the Great Danes' Anna Bottino got her team on the board with an unassisted goal. Albany scored again 10 minutes after halftime, tying the game at 2-2 on one of two second-period penalty corners.
The score remained tied for nearly 14 minutes before Wold, the team captain, came up with the gamewinner. In the 62nd minute, the Tar Heels added another on a penalty corner, when van't Hoog tipped in a shot by Wold.
“It was exciting game and we had a good start,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “Albany is a very tough team and they're coming off a big win at Maryland. So it was great that we got off to a fast start, but it was frustrating to again get a two-goal lead and have a team come back. It gave us a scare.
“We played better in the second half and I was pleased with the senior leadership. Albany is a great team, but we found a way to win.”
UNC outshot the Great Danes 19-8 and drew one more corner (8-7) than the host team. Junior Shannon Johnson played all 70 minutes in goal for UNC, making two saves.
Carolina opened the trip with a 4-2 loss at No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday. This marked the third weekend in a row that the Tar Heels have been on the road.
UNC returns to action this Friday in its first home game of the season. Louisville visits for a 6 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Henry Stadium. On Sunday, the Tar Heels host Miami (Ohio) at 2 p.m.
“I'm proud of our group,” Shelton said. “We've gotten through a difficult stretch and we're all really looking forward to playing at home at Henry Stadium.”
