September 7, 2015 | Women's Soccer
CHICAGO (Sept. 7, 2015) - Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn was honored Monday as the winner of 2015 NWSL Golden Boot, awarded to the player with the most goals during the regular season. In the process the former University of North Carolina National Player of the Year also set a league mark for most goals per game in a season.
Dunn, 23, led the NWSL in scoring this year with 15 goals in 20 games to go along with three assists to become the youngest winner of the award, ahead of 2014 winner Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little (who was 24 years old) and 2013 winner FC Kansas City midfielder Lauren Holiday (who was 25).
The North Carolina product fell one goal shy of matching Little's NWSL single-season record of 16 goals (in a 24-game season) in 2014. However, Dunn's 0.75 goals per team game is a new league record, besting Little's 0.66 last year.
The New Hyde Park, N.Y. native scored six game-winning goals during the 2015 campaign. She scored against seven of the eight other teams in the league, with the last-place Boston Breakers the only team against which Dunn did not find the back of the net. Her four goals against Portland Thorns FC and the Houston Dash were the most Dunn scored against any single opponent.
Dunn was voted the NWSL Player of the Week six times this season - another NWSL record, beating the previous mark of three set in 2014 by former Portland Thorns FC midfielder Veronica Boquete. Last week she was also recognized as the NWSL Player of the Month for August.
The Washington Spirit face Seattle Reign FC on Sunday, September 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 at Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium in the semifinals of the 2015 NWSL Playoffs.
